They found one another, A noble and a commoner ,
One from a manor and one from shack
but he loved the lady and she loved him back

So down from the manor where folk drink from jars
and laugh with abandon and toast to the stars
Her Father said Belle, love whoever you choose,
So she loved a man who made her some shoes,

The eyelets were shells, washed in from the sea
The laces where spun from the finest of fleece
The leather was dyed with blue berries he'd grown
and he stitched by the light of the candle alone

One the eve of the wedding, they danced the whole night
and waltzed till the dew on the roses had dried
Then down from the manor through the hole in the hedge
to make love in the loft in a shoemakers bed

With a heart heavy as lead it was one day he told her,
My country needs an army so now I'm a soldier
and she sobbed at south hampton and cried as the mothers,
and sister and wives bade farewell to their brothers

And everyone knew, if the shoes never frayed,
that Belle was in love till the end of her days
nobody asked her, for everyone knew
the trials of time and soles of her shoes
